Breastfeeding Support at Witham

Compassionate guidance for confident breastfeeding

A mother and baby

While breastfeeding is a natural way of giving your baby nourishment, that doesn’t mean that it always comes easily to new moms or their babies. Whether you’re breastfeeding for the first time, feeding multiples or experiencing unexpected challenges, we’re here to help.

We help with the resources you need to manage feedings with confidence

Our lactation team partners with you to help you achieve your goals with breastfeeding and pumping your breast milk.

Each member of our team is dedicated to helping you succeed with feeding. All team members are international board-certified lactation consultants, healthcare professionals who have a specialty certification in helping women with breastfeeding. We understand that every mom and baby has a unique breastfeeding experience. Our lactation consultants are trained to assist with a variety of feeding situations and concerns. If we identify a concern that is related to feeding, we will communicate with your primary care doctor or pediatrician to connect you to the care you need. Our services include:

Personalized Plans

We will partner with you to develop a feeding plan that works for you and your baby. We take into account your previous breastfeeding experience and goals as well as your and your baby’s health and medical history.

Individualized Support

We will meet with you one-on-one to give you and your baby the attention you need and deserve. We strive to provide the most personalized and comfortable care experience for you and your baby, free of distractions. When you come to our lactation office for an appointment, you’ll meet with a lactation consultant in a private room.

Collaborative Care

Our lactation consultants partner with OB/GYNs and pediatricians to address health concerns in moms and babies related to feeding.

Access to Human Donor Milk

We proudly offer pasteurized human donor milk to babies staying in our hospital who qualify based on medical need. It is unique for a hospital of Witham’s size to offer access to human donor milk.

We offer free lactation/breastfeeding support during pregnancy and continuing throughout your breastfeeding experience

Through weekly support groups and private appointments, we provide support to our mothers and babies at the time of delivery and beyond.

If you receive maternity care at Witham, we will offer inpatient support during your hospital stay in the maternity center. Once you return home, we welcome you to access our outpatient services, even if you delivered at a different hospital. Our services include:

To help you get started with breastfeeding and pumping breast milk, evaluating you and your baby while you feed and offering guidance

Join our Breastfeeding Support Group to learn the advantages of breastfeeding, how to properly position your baby so they latch and how to pump and store your breastmilk. The group meets every Monday (except holidays) from 10 - 11 a.m. in the Witham Health Services V.I.P. Dining Room. The support group is an opportunity for mothers to meet and discuss their breastfeeding needs in a group setting with other mothers. Meetings are facilitated by a board-certified lactation consultant. The meetings allow time for breastfeeding infants, checking before and after feeding weights, and an opportunity to gain support from other mothers. The support group meetings are open to breastfeeding mothers and babies of any age. There is no cost associated with this support group and no registration is required. An individual lactation consultation with a board-certified lactation consultant may be necessary if you or your baby have additional breastfeeding needs.

Witham graciously accepts human milk donations from screened and approved donors

Do you have an oversupply of breast milk, or do you have milk coming in that your baby no longer needs? Witham partners with The Milk Bank, which pasteurizes and tests milk before being distributed to hospitals across the United States.

If you’re interested in becoming a donor, please visit themilkbank.org or call 317-536-1670. If you’re already a donor and want to drop off milk, please contact Witham Lactation Services at lactation@witham.org or 765-485-8411.
