Getting up from a chair might seem like a simple, everyday task, but it can tell us a lot about your health. Physical therapists often use sit-to-stand tests to measure leg strength and mobility, but research suggests these tests can reveal much more than how strong your legs are.
There are several versions of the test. Some measure how quickly you can stand up from a chair five times, while others count how many times you can stand up and sit back down in 30 or 60 seconds. Each version provides slightly different information about your physical abilities, including leg strength, balance, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness.
Research has found that people who perform more poorly on these tests may be at greater risk for falls, difficulty with everyday activities, hospitalization, and other health complications. Sit-to-stand performance may even provide insight into overall health as we age. That’s because standing up from a chair requires several body systems to work together, including your muscles, joints, balance system, and cardiovascular system.
The good news? These tests are simple, inexpensive, and require very little equipment. Your physical therapist can use them to establish a baseline, track your progress throughout rehabilitation, and identify areas where you may benefit from additional exercise or support. Comparing your results over time can help show whether your strength, mobility, and endurance are improving.
What Does This Mean For You?
Something as simple as getting out of a chair can provide valuable information about your physical health. If you have difficulty standing up, feel unsteady, or notice that everyday activities are becoming more challenging, these may be signs that it’s time to work on your strength, balance, or endurance. A lower score doesn’t automatically mean you have a health problem, but it can be a useful starting point for a conversation with your healthcare provider.
The Bottom Line...
The sit-to-stand test is about more than leg strength. It can help your physical therapist understand how well your body is functioning as a whole, identify opportunities to improve your mobility, and help you stay active and independent as you age!
