Witham representatives and hospitals across Indiana rally at the Statehouse to protest pending cuts.

On Monday, March 2, 2020 representatives from hospitals across Indiana held a news conference to urge lawmakers to defeat provision HB 1004 that will slash hospital reimbursement and jeopardize access to health care for Hoosiers. If the measure passes, hospitals will be forced to consolidate or discontinue services and some hospitals will close.

The Senate will vote on HB 1004, which includes SB243 “site of service” provisions that will devastate hospitals across Indiana. The amended bill would allow the legislature to override private contracts between hospitals and insurance companies, and would drastically cut reimbursement for hospital-level services and procedures that are provided in hospital outpatient departments and at off-site locations. These off-campus sites are subject to the same regulatory requirements as hospitals – and they have the same equipment and staffing. The provision is a windfall for big insurance companies and a giant step backward for Hoosiers when it comes to access to health care services.
