Breast Care
April 25, 2021
May is Women’s Health month! This is a reminder for all women to take care of themselves and make their health a priority. Timing this year is very important given we are seemingly exiting the pandemic resulting in increasing comfort and trust in returning to behaviors that we once took for granted. An example would be making an appointment for your annual mammogram.
There is no question that many women deferred their mammogram screening in 2020, so now is the time to make your appointment for 2021! I want to assure you that Witham Health is providing the highest quality, state of art mammography, in an environment that optimizes your health and safety.
I would like to share a few breast cancer facts: yearly, 276,480 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and an additional 48,530 women will be diagnosed with non-invasive (DCIS) breast cancer. While there have been dramatic improvement in survival rates, unfortunately 42,170 will die each year of breast cancer. Early detection with routine mammography has been key in reducing the number of breast cancer deaths.
There is consensus that women without specific risk factors should begin routine screening mammograms at age forty. Women with a family history or other risk for breast cancer should talk to their primary care provider about a breast cancer risk assessment and the need for early or more frequent screenings.
