February is American Heart Month and the week of February 7-14 is Congenital Heart Defect Week. Heart disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States and in Indiana and congenital heart defects are the leading birth defect in newborns. The “Little Hats, Big Hearts” program raises awareness about both while offering new parents information about living a heart-healthy life. This is the 4th year the American Heart Association has given out hats to more than 12,000 babies. Witham is one of 50 hospitals in Indiana participating in the program. The hats were lovingly hand-knitted by more than 230 volunteers.
